Sir Anthony Kenny tells the fascinating story of the birth of philosophy and its remarkable flourishing in the ancient Mediterranean world.
This is the first of four volumes in which he unfolds a magisterial new history of Western philosophy, the first major single-author narrative of the history of philosophy for several decades. Kenny's lucid and stimulating history brings to life the great minds of the past and tells the story of one thousand years of thought, from 550 BC to 450 AD, revealing the origins of many modern ideas and issues.
