Sextus Empiricus and the Agrippan Modes

This book examines five different argument forms (or 'modes') which lie at the heart Pyrrhonian scepticism - one of the two main forms philosophical scepticism took in Antiquity. These modes have both abiding and intrinsic philosophical interest and the book offers an analysis of how they are supposed to work, both individually and collectively. In particular, Stefan Sienkiewicz distinguishes between two different perspectives on these modes - there is the
perspective of the sceptic's dogmatic opponent and there is the perspective of the sceptic himself. The sceptic and the dogmatist are two very different creatures, epistemically speaking, and Sienkiewicz
elucidates the corresponding differences in the argumentative structure of the modes depending on whether we are thinking about them from the point of view of the sceptic or from the point of view of the sceptic's dogmatic opponent.
